Adjusting a baby is different than than adjusting a toddler. Adjusting a toddler is different than adjusting a child. Adjusting a child is different than adjusting a teenager. I don’t adjust my grandma who is 88 years old, 4’11” and 105 lbs the same way I adjust my brother who is 6’1″, 225 lbs. I think you get the idea.
When we adjust babies, we use the amount of pressure you would put on a tomato to see if it’s ripe. There is an intimate relationship between the spine and the brain. The adjustment removes interference in the nerve system due to subluxation, thereby restoring normal nerve system integration and optimal function. The difference in technique has little impact on the result of removing nerve system interference. My approach is to use as little force as possible to make a correction to the nerve system.
Why should babies and children get adjusted? Watching children play for an hour or two answers this question. Stress causes subluxation and there are physical, chemical and emotional stressors. Children have all of these. The first subluxations can begin before birth and birth is traumatic. Imagine for a second what it’s like to come into the world. It’s a pretty crazy process. An amazing symphony of physiology takes place and a little miracle is in our lives forever. Baby’s position in the womb is a factor. Depending on how much baby is able to move around inside the womb, subluxation (a spinal segment with improper function) may manifest even before delivery.
Subluxations are silent at first but overtime may manifest as symptoms and conditions. Think about the milestones in a child’s life. Learning to crawl, speak, walk, connect to loved ones, all of these things are dependent on the nerve system which controls and coordinates all function of the body. The goal with chiropractic care is to remove interference in the nerve system allowing the power in the body to express optimal genetic health potential.
The question then becomes if there is a subluxation present, how long do we want it to be there before it is corrected and how often should we check the child in the future. The latter part of that question is more difficult to answer, but we have a systematic approach to providing the best quality chiropractic care possible.
Some chiropractic care is better than no chiropractic care and regular chiropractic care is better than sporadic chiropractic care.
